July Goals

The year is already halfway over! How is that possible?! June flew by, probably because I’ve been so busy with The Light Owl. Over 2,700 people checked out the site, and The Light Owl got over 4,600 page views! That is miles above what I was hoping to achieve in my first month as a blogger.  The only thing I can say is THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who shared, commented, and supported my little passion project and made it such a success!

I learned a lot about what it means to be a blogger last month. First of all, it is a much, MUCH bigger commitment than I ever thought it would be! I have learned a lot and yet I have a lot to learn. I am incredibly thankful for the blogging community that has embraced me and my blog. It has been amazing to meet so many like-minded people who are pursuing their own creative passions.

I’m optimistic about everything that July will hold. First of all, I have three special birthdays in July. My Dad, husband, and father-in-law are all July babies. That means lots of good food and celebrating! Second, I was given an incredible opportunity at work to attend a conference in the middle of the month to become a counseling supervisor, something I’ve wanted to do since I started grad school 6 years ago! And third, some dear friends of ours are getting married at the end of the month, and there is not much that I love more than celebrating love!

July Goals

Personal Goals:

  1. Stick to a consistent workout routine

Before blogging, I was finally falling into a consistent workout routine where I was working out three days a week. Since launching my blog, my gym time has been replaced by writing, editing, and promoting my blog. I’m still active, but not like I was. This month, I plan to spend at least three days out of the week working out.

  2.  Read two books

I love to read, but lately I’ve been starting a bunch of books and not finishing them. My goal is to read at least two books cover to cover this July. If you have any great recommendations, let me know in the comments!

  3. Be more intentional with my time

Especially since launching my blog, I’ve struggled with making valuable use of my down time. This month, I want to make a real effort to be intentional with the way I spend my evenings. I want way fewer evenings of being absorbed into my phone or Netflix and more evenings spent in good conversation.

Blog Goals

1. Write Ahead

Having a full-time job and writing three blog posts a week is a LOT of work! I had no idea when I started that I would spend hours a day writing, editing, and promoting. When I launched my blog, I launched with five posts. I also was able to write ahead when we went on vacation. Boy did that feel good! I want to write all my posts over the weekends so that the week can be focused promotion and family time.

2. Create a Content Calendar

Although I have a HUGE list of blog post ideas, there are some days where I’m coming home the night before a post is supposed to be published and I have no idea what to write. Creating a content calendar will help me out a lot if I know what I want to write each week. My goal is to create a content calendar for July and August.

3. Post More on Social Media

So I’m pretty bad with this. Some days I post quite a bit on my social media handles, and other times I may go days without uttering a word. I’m aiming to up my social media engagement! Expect to see a lot more from me on all my social media handles! Find me here:

  • These are great goals for the month! I slacked off on my editorial calendar and social media posting last month, so I’m definitely kicking it into high gear in July!

  • Candice Schenk

I love your goals! I love the practice of setting, writing down and especially blogging goals. It helps so much to be accountable!! btw- I’m a new follower on IG! 🙂

    • HEY THERE thanks for your support! That means a ton to me! Yeah, writing down my goals and making them public helps me a lot. I hate to admit when I’m wrong, haha, so having some accountability like this is good for me.

  • Keri Duckworth

    I recommend you read the books I sent you ;D ;D ;D

  • You’ve only been blogging for a month? Your blog looks wonderful, you’ve clearly learned a lot already!

  • I like these goals. I feel like we have very similar agendas. I’m a content curator for other’s, too. On particular client has been extremely long term so I make up all the key words. It’s good to keep a calendar to track trends.

These are awesome goals! I have found that it is so important to take at least 5 minutes of “me time” a day. It helps reset my mind, emotions, etc. I definitely encourage you to do that. I am finishing up the Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines and it has been fabulous so far! Good luck with your goals. You are gonna crush it!

    • Ah yes that is such a good idea. I try to incorporate my “me time” as soon as I wake up. My husband leaves for work at 4:30 AM so he is already gone when I leave for work. Since I love spending my free time with him, I’ve found that the easiest way for me to incorporate me time is in the morning. And I am happy to hear that the Magnolia Story has been so good! I LOVE Fixer Upper! I will definitely be checking that book out if not this month, next month. 🙂 Thank you for the recommendation and the support!

  • Congrats girl! That’s huge for your first month of blogging. I totally love your blog! Def create a content calendar – such a game changer!

  • Oh, I hear ya, blogging and working full time is a lot of work! But wow, your numbers are awesome!! Congratulations! Love your blog btw.

  • Christina Nesbitt Shoemaker

Writing ahead is a fantastic goal! That’s always mine too and I feel like a total rock star if I have 3 posts ready to go a week in advance!

  • Congrats on your first month of blogging! Keep at it!

  • What an amazing start to launching your blog congratulations. Having a blog tribe is so vital, I didn’t understand that at the beginning and it took me about 3 years to learn that lesson (better late than never). I have so many books on my shelf it’s ridiculous. I liked Me Before You (but I didn’t finish it) & The Girl on a Train (was really good & I actually finished it). As far as Social Media I def recommending scheduling as much content as possible. I use Statusbrew, Hootsuite, Tailwind, and LaterApp. I know it’s a lot of apps but I like to plan everything out so all I have to do is focus on interacting. Happy blogging!

    • Thanks for the feedback! I use Buffer and Tailwind right now and they’re super helpful. I just want to be more diligent about the social media scheduling especially. Tailwind is a lifesaver! Girl on the Train was GREAT! Thrillers are my fave.

  • Andrea

I’m with ya’ on the personal and blogging goals!!!!!! I also need to create a content calendar! 🙈Now let’s go slay some goals! Cheers! 🙂

  • Rachel Loza

I love your goals and honestly, I have similar goals for this month!

  • Caitlin Patoka

That is great traffic for your first month! I’m sure you’ll see huge growth in the coming months too! Love how realistic you are with your goals too. Life outside of blogging is important!

  • These are great goals! My big goals for this month are to exercise more, finish a bible study I’ve been dragging out for months, and potty train my youngest.

  • I’m so glad you’ve joined the blogging community! I’m excited to get to know you more through blogging and see whatever new content you bring in the future 🙂 You’re off to a great start! (and your first blog looks SOOO much prettier than my first blog did haha!!)

  • Congratulations! That’s so exciting. I am definitely with you on these goals. I spent my blogging break pre-writing posts and it makes things SO much easier! I also carry around a notebook for those bursts of inspiration, which also helps make writing posts easier too. I am also right there with you on the workout routine. It’s tough, especially during hot summer days! You got this! PS: I adore your blog!

    • Thank you! I do try to carry a notebook around but I often forget. Thankfully, my phone’s notes app is always with me 😉

  • I am working on some goals for July in the form of a Bucket List. I am reading The Hate U GIve by Angie Thomas and Bittersweet (author escapes me).
